Dear friends,

These film photos are from my last trip to New York City, when I tried to get to Strand Book Store before catching my bus out of the city, but ended up at The Strand apartment building, nowhere near my desired destination. With my hopes of buying a book before I left the city tossed out like the Duncan Donuts coffee cups strewn all around me in the gutters, I decided to go find a place to get a bite and rest from lugging around my 30-pound duffle bag.

I landed at Little Pie Company, which sounded like just the thing in a moment of such despair, and in minutes, I ended up with a perfect morning. For the next hour and a half, I sat outside the little shop nibbling on one of the most delicious personal key lime pies for breakfast, taking advantage of the film roll in my dad’s old Canon AE-1, writing in my journal, and eavesdropping on a group of little old ladies gathered around a table near me, who I could only hope repeated this routine every Sunday morning, if not every morning.

I love traveling because, even though sometimes in spite of all possible preparations,  I end up on the wrong train or at the wrong building, somehow everything still works out and I find little unexpected places to eat or I meet fascinating people I never would have met otherwise. It’s magical.

You know that cliche that goes, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans”? I would say that it applies to traveling in the best possible way.

***Again, I can’t emphasize enough that Key Lime Pie. Pick one up the next time you are in NYC. I’ll remind you that Little Pie Company isn’t near Strand Book Store, so don’t plan to do both at the same time.

Your friend (that is now craving Key Lime Pie),
